NwTU ON THE BISHOP’S TRAISCRIRTS, - This term is used because it is the accepted name for the copies of the register sent every Easter to the bishoo' s registry, under the Canon of 1597 . In a few areas (including Bedfordshire), where the arch- deacon’s jurisdiction was co-ordinate with that of the bishop, the archdeacon’s registry received the copies, in which cases the correct term would be "Archdeacon’s Transcripts O' For Bedfordshire they are extant from 1602 to 1871, and are fairly complete, except for the Civil War period (1643—49) and for various odd years. They comprise about 25,000 separate documents, and form part of the Muniments of the Arch- deaconry of Bedford which are housed in the County Record Office, Shire Hall, Bedford, For as many as 48 Bedfordshire parishes, the earliest extant volume of the original register commences after 1602 (occasionally as late as the 18th century); in these cases the "Bishop’ Transcripts" are the sole source. In addition, the following defects in many original registers are often overcome with the aid of the "Bishop’s Transcripts": (a) missing leaves; (b) mutilated or incomplete entries; (c) illeg-

ible entries; (d) confused dates or arrangement. Further, the Transcripts sometimes yield facts not recorded in the registers: these are denoted in the text by [f].

NOTE ON THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE COPIES, Until 1752, the year in England commenced on 25 March, The edited copies of the registers retain this method.

PREFACE

The six adjacent parishes whose registers are included in this volume lie in north Bedfordshire, on the "borders of Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire; the last of “the group "belonged in fact to the latter county until 1896. The whole district is now very thinly populated; most, if not all, of these six villages" have suffered rather severe declines in recent years. In the year of the first census (1801), their population was in every instance a little higher than at the last census (1931). With the aid of the registers, we may trace the matter back two centuries earlier. There is some evidence for believing that several of the villages had at least as many (if not more) inhabitants at the time of the Armada as at that of Trafalgar. The deduction is drawn from the total number of baptisms recorded over periods of equal length, and seems to apply to Shelton, Melchbournc and Swineshead »** But the basis of comparison is of course not always a safe one.

Once again, the immense importance of the "Bishop's Transcripts'^* needs no emphasis. Apart from Swineshead, every parish has lost the first volume of its register: in no case does it begin before 1645, whilst two date from as late as 1706.

Regarding the group as a whole, perhaps the clergy form the main subject of interest. Two of them were energetic men Whose labours extended beyond their par- ochial spheres; two others were lax, and their delinquencies brought them before the national courts, ’intruded' ministers can apparently be traced in the middle of the 17th century in five of the six parishes: the remaining one (Swineshead) had "a rector whose action in twice conforming secured his tenure throughout the disturbed period in the Church. Of this rector two rare documents have been" preserved. All these men are referred to in the appropriate Introductory Notes, in "which such fresh information as the registers are found to furnish is briefly noticed. Another unusual thing regarding the clergy of north Bedfordshire is the association so many of them had with more than one parish in the district.

Time after time we see that a rector found his next benefice in a neighbouring village. Nearly as frequently we discover that another served two of these "par- ishes jointly, as rector of both, curate of both, or rector of one and curate of another. The number of these instances requires an explanation. The reason is that the advowson of seven parishes in the north of the county belonged to the St. Johns of Bletsoe during the vrtiole or part of our period; and their influence as manorial lords embraced two further parishes. In consequence, the clergy of this district enjoyed a freedom of movement and a scope for preferment in their own immediate area. The cause and effect of this circumstance is set out below, in the Appendix to this Preface. From this it will be clear that the student of the religious life in north Bedfordshire at the period must bear in mind the pro- portion of such pluralist and absentee clergy; and in this connection the comment of a rector and patron of a parish in this district at the end of our period is illuminating: "it is melancholy to see several of our neighbouring parishes, with- out so much as a resident curate, served irregularly once on Sunday in haste," §

With the issue of this volume, the Registers of twenty— three parishes have now been published? and it is hoped that this further substantial progress will be gratifying to the " subscribing libraries. No local support has been obtained towaids the cost of this seventh volume, which could not have been attempted had not an offer to safeguard volume eight been first secured.

PARISH REGISTER OF

SOULDROP

(1602-1812)

NEITHER the parish history nor the parish register of Souldrop show any remarkable features . Its manorial history is also devoid of special interest.. After the dissolution of the religious houses, the manor was obtained by the Cobbe family, who continued to hold it until 1665; their seat lay at Sharnbroolc, the adjoining parish, but several members are found to have been baptized, married or buried at Souldrop. The Register is meagre in one respect the entire omission of the mother's name until as late as 1719, but the entries for the first decade of the 18th century are full, occupations being always given, and dates of birth (as well as of baptism) frequently stated. John Webster Hawksley, rector, 1792-1821, has enriched his register with a variety of additional notes in pencil.

Some of these would seem to bo not quite contemporary, for his remarks are appended to entries from as early as 1773. The nature of the comments would suggest that they were trustworthy, but these pencil jottings have been carefully distinguished from the record proper. The relative number of 'foreign' marriages in 1705-35 is noticeable, as is also the number of deaths in August 1657, apparently the result of the plague. V1)

The church history during the period of the Civil War and the Common- wealth is almost a complete blank. George Winstanley was rector from 1629 to at least 1640/1 (the date of the last extant "Bishop's Transcript" be- fore the gap). In 1665 John Dod was appointed on the resignation of the "last rector" (whose name is not recorded) . Between these two dates the solo reference is in 1657, when Thomas Scriven made the usual composition on presentation for the payment of first-fruits . (2 ) The Register has two later entries of him (page A2 ) , showing almost certainly that he was still holding the benefice at the end of 1663, having presumably conformed in the previous year. From 1664 to 1698 he was rector of Knotting.

A little light is thrown on the history of the parish church. It is stated elsewhere (3) that "the old church fell down towards the end of the 18th century and was replaced by a barn-like structure, which was succeeded by the present building." Notes in the baptismal and marriage volumes at this period, supplemented by one in Knotting marriage volume (page BIO), describe how Knotting church served for both villages during 1794—1800, while Souldrop church remained in a ruinous condition. The parishes of Souldrop and Knotting had been united in 1735 (page B14).

The Transcript for 1627-28 bears the interesting form "Sulthroppe"

a late instance of the use of the original suffix "-thorpe".

Tho population of the parish in 1801 was 188, and in 1931 was 162; its area is 1076 acres. The adjoining parishes are Knotting, Sharnbrook, Odell, Podington and Wymington, all in Bedfordshire, and a small part of Rushden in Northamptonshire. There are no hamlets in the parish.

(1) The editor recently found in Riseley Register the following contemporary note , with which the Burials for 1657 commence: "1657. The yeare of mortality in all places, especially in countrey villages." There are 22 burials, Sept. 1657 to Mar. 1657/8. Riseley lies three miles from Sould- rop, and adjoins Knotting, Melchbourne and Swineshead, but only Souldrop Register supports the remark.

THE

PARISH REGISTER OF

KNOTTING

(1592-1812)

THE date of the commencement of the Register, as stated above, needs q.ualif ic - ation. It applies merely to the Be.pt i sms , of which a single leaf (1592-98) is the sole surviving portion of the parchment copy from the original register on paper. Apart from this leaf, the register exists only from 1645; the record for 1302-40 is drawn, therefore from' the ‘'Bishop's Transcripts". What is now the first volume is in fact made up of three volumes which have been clumsily joined together, the second and third only lightly stitched and lacking covers. The entries in the earliest of these sections (1645 to about 1677) are in dis- order, and its last page, together with the first page in the second section, is illegible through rubbing.

The parishes of Knotting and Souldrop have now been united for nearly two centuries (a copy of the deed of union, 1735, is enrolled in the Register).

As might be expected, therefore, the same brief but pithy pencil notes, already noticed in the Register of Souldrop, are added to ma.ny entries in that of Knot- ting; among the causes of death three are small-pox (1802-03) and one typhus fever (1312). The plague possibly visited Knotting in the early summer of 1651, when seven deaths occurred within a fortnight, the yearly average being only two.

In 1637 a prosecution took place which has given Knotting church a certain degree of notoriety. The churchwardens were cited because they and Mr .A Ivey, the rector, had on ‘Shrove Tuesday in 1634, 1635 and 1636, permitted and watched cock-fightings in the chancel, amid general wagerings by other spectators . (1 )

No entry in the Register refers specifically to this rector, but the Transcripts from 1602 to 1639/40 all have "Arthur Alvey, rector" at the foot. Appointed in 1591, he remained rector of Knotting therefore for at least half a century, and was probably an aged man at the time of the scandal. His successor is recorded in 1644, when William Burt (2) was instituted, who was followed in 1645 by Robert Hawkins, (2) whose burial (the only mention) is in 1664/5. Apart from these bare notices, there is little of interest at this period, except the statutory ap- pointment in 1653 of the civil parish registrar - John Seabrooke, a parishioner, (page Bli) . His illiterate hand pens the entries for the four years 1654-57, but gives olace in 1653 to the hand that commenced in 1645. The entries ex- tending from the burial of Thomas Scriven, rector, in Jan. 1698/9, as far as 1740 (perhaps to 1743) are written throughout in an archaic- looking handwriting, an imitation of that which had prevailed a century earlier (technically termed "Secretary Hand"). Surely a mark of a painstaking character, this quaint en- grossed script is apparently to be attributed to John Sharpe, rector from 1699 to 1743, when he resigned, probably owing to advanced age. He had baptised Ms son John at Knotting in 1697, though then minister of Peasmarsh, Sussex/^)

The marriage entries are well supplemented with the parties' abodes for nearly a century before registration of these facts became compulsory. Occupa- tions are given regularly only during 1698-1707 and 1728-39, but they yield an unusual point of interest the number of grasiers. This term is applied to five out of six and five out eight fathers respectively in the Baptisms for these periods. The Register seems to imply that pasture was relatively consid- erable here. It would certainly appear from the Tithe Apportionment of 1838 that Knotting Green originally stretched from the hamlet of that name to the Bedford - Rushden road.

Among the lords of its manor, Knotting can claim two poets, Edmund Waller, who inherited it in 1616 and sold it in 1644, and Henry James Pye, who was a member of an old Berkshire family, and sold it to the Duke of Bedford in 17*14

Bii

KNOTTING PARISH REGISTER

Neither are mentioned in the Register. Pye's main estate lay at Faringdon; financial difficulties compelled him to sell it soon after 1784, when he was elected M P. for Berkshire. The poet laureateship, which he secured in 1790 through political support, suffered a severe loss of reputation during Pye's tenure, for his verse seldom rose above a mediocre level. (1) A few details can be added to the standard biography. Thepoet's father, Henry Pye, who acquired the manor of Knotting shortly after 1681, was a. J.P. for 'Bedfordshire as well as for Berkshire. ( 2) His son is described as an active justice for his home county, and is recorded also as a J.P. for Bedford- shire/?1 2 3 but, without making an exhaustive search, no entry of his attendance at the Bedfordshire Quarter Sessions has been noted. His inclusion in the Lists of Jurors for 1771 and 1772 is no proof of his having resided at Knotting. It was doubtless his pecuniary embarrassment which led him to dispose of his Knotting estate before his ancestral one. Dr. Robert Pye, rector of Knott ing-with-Souldrop, 1743-74 was presented by the father of the poet, who presented the two succeeding rectors.

It has been suggested^) that the parish was much more populous in the 17th century than in 1801; the number of baptisms during the two centuries of our period certainly affords little evidence of growth, but suggests that the population re- mained fairly stable rather than increased. The population of the parish in 1801 was 105, and in 1931 was 118; its area is 1739 acres. The adjoining parishes are Yielden, Melchbourne, Riseley, Sharnbrook and Souldrop, in Bedfordshire, and Rush- den , Higham Park (the latter extraparochial) , andNewton Bromswold, in Northamp- tonshire. The only hamlet in the parish is Knotting Green.
